Ban on Coal Burning in London
In 1306 a city ordinance was passed, decreeing that heating with coal was forbidden when Parliament was in session. The ordinance was not particularly effective.

Although use of coal had disappeared in Britain after the Romans left, it re-emerged at the end of the 12th Century, and was adopted with such enthusiasm that by the beginning of the 14th Century the air conditions in London had deteriorated enough to cause widespread discontent. This didn’t put people off coal both for home use and for industry though, and gradually mining became more ambitious, moving on from surface mining as techniques were adopted to keep tunnels intact as coal seams were mined through them.
